Humayun Ali by .. Humayun Riyasat (Boston,MA USA)
Author does in fairness mention make a great deal of arguments for the need for operational risk. The problem is that anyone buying the book already understands there is a need. They are buying the book to get hints on what to do about it. I know it is all relative but as an expert he needs to take a stand and come up with some fairly universal best practices.

Impractical and long winded diatrabe by .. Mr. Judgemental (Japan)
What I wanted:

1] Definition of Operational risk

2] Basel II standard explained in easy English

3] Flowchart for how to go about dealing with it

4] Some kind of standard best practices based on his experiences

What I got

1] Operational risk is everything.

2] Basel II not explained. It seems to assume you already get it.

3] No system is presented. He argues it is all relative.

4] No best practices. Again it is all relative.

He does in fairness mention make a great deal of arguments for the need for operational risk. The problem is that anyone buying the book already understands there is a need. They are buying the book to get hints on what to do about it. I know it is all relative but as an expert he needs to take a stand and come up with some fairly universal best practices. Also he needs to realize that this is a young area and many banks are just creating their Op risk departments and need some kind of help in how to go about that. Not theory but concrete practical help.

To complicate matters his English is boorish and he uses bullets like they were going out of style. Not to sum up things like they are normally used but rather to break up run-on sentences. The sign of a well written book isn’t snotty language or fancy math terms. The sign of a good book is that the readers learned something from it. I came away from this book no closer to knowing what to do about Op risk then before I bought it.

In the mind-boggling confusion of electrical codes, Redwood Kardon, a building inspector for the city of Oakland, California, has pulled together a comprehensive manual, more a tool than a book per se. Code Check Electrical offers the straight dope on electrical codes in easy-to-understand language, with a clearly organized flip-chart format that has a durable finish for use in the field.

For builders, building inspectors, or homeowners who want to do some electrical work safely and up to current codes, this is an invaluable tool for understanding what the electrical codes are, why they are important, and how to make sure electrical work is done as safely as current science and common sense allow. There is an amazing amount of useful and easily understandable information in this diminutive manual. –Mark A. Hetts

Product Description

The Code Check series provides answers to all types of building code questions. The books are filled with essential information, yet are handy enough to take to the job site.

Provides streamlined but comprehensive information on electrical code requirements. It is cross-referenced to the National Electric Code, which is updated every three years.

A Must Have by .. S. Koepper (Long Island, NY)
Excellent knowledge base for the DIY and pro. This series of books will show you everything you need to know to do it right the first time and pass those crucial inspections.

I can’t follow the format by .. M. Leitch ()
The book is awful. I cannot follow the format and don’t understand what they are trying to communicate. There are a few bits of helpful information - but overall this book will do nothing for me. The “cute” drawings and jokes are not appropriate for a reference on electrical codes. And why dedicate so much space the the history of electricity?

Don’t waste your money. Go with something professionally prepared. This flipbook was not.

Outdated Material by .. Ricardo Zelaya (Orlando, FL USA)
This book is mostly general information. Many of the figures do not identify the wires e.g. hot, neutral, ground. The section on Grounding is many years out of date, and would present an electrical hazard if followed. Most modern homes nowadays use PVC piping thus rendering all this advice on this page useless and dangerous for the layman. Because plumbers use nonconductive material to make connection watertight, using pipes for electrical ground is outright dangerous. Do not use this book because some advice is good, but some is not. Not knowing what advice is the good one may put your life in danger.

Useful in spite of itself by .. ()
If the purchaser actually needs to know the UBC reference numbers, they will need to do some searching, because all too often the Section number cited in the Code Check series isn’t correct. I do not have a copy of the International Building Code so I can not judge how the actual references correspond to the citations listed here, but one wonders how the authors could get the UBC citations so wrong, so often.

Because the Code Check series cover residential applications of the Code quite well, I suggest it be used as a study aid for Code Students. Because the surface is designed to be erased many times without leaving ghosts, the student will need to make paper copies. If the sudent goes thru the lists, they should mark down the actual section references on the copy. When the student is finished, he or she will have a good idea of what the code requires for residences and how to use the UBC (or the California Building Code) to locate those requirements in the code.

Fantastic Information & Great Pictures by .. ()
I love the format of this book, simple, easy and I love the playful nature of the illustrations. Never have codes been more easy to understand.

Book Description

Have an extra $40,000 each year that you don’t know what to do with? You or your parents may end up paying this amount or more each year for long-term care, and the costs are escalating rapidly. Don’t let medical expenses ruin your retirement plans. In Long Term Care Insurance Made Simple author Les Abromovitz offers practical advice on whether you need a policy and tells you how to buy the best one for your money.
With anecdotes, humor, and real-life horror stories, Abromovitz makes long-term care insurance easy-to-understand. Each chapter ends with a short summary highlighting key information for you to remember to ask your insurance agent, health care provider or a legal professional. He’ll tell you if a medical expense can be applied as a tax deduction or not. And tells you why hiding your parent’s life savings when faced with the decision to place them in a nursing home does not work. You’ll find out the latest changes in the law affecting long-term care policies. Develop the right financial strategy to protect your family and make sure their money is not at risk.

An objective and fair look at long-term care insurance by .. ()
This book offers realistic and objective advice regarding long-term care insurance. The author understands why so many of us procrastinate when it comes to buying a long-term care policy. He really helped me break through the “paralysis of analysis.”

I imagine a few long-term care insurance agents won’t like the book, because the author tells some war stories from his experience in helping consumers while working for a state insurance department. In fact, the author is a proponent of long-term care insurance and believes that most agents are extremely concerned about the welfare of their clients.

Because he’s objective and doesn’t work in the insurance industry, I trust his conclusion that long-term care insurance is a very important policy to have, as long as you buy it from someone who is looking out for your best interests. He also offers many ways to save money.

Better than nothing, but not by much by .. David L Adams (Nicholasville, Kentucky United States)
This book is too long to provide such a brief overview of long-term care. The message of the book seems to be: you need long-term care insurance. That’s it. There is little useful information on how to choose one policy over another and the attempts at financial planning advice would have been better left to someone else. Save the ten dollars. One will fare better with a free government publication.

The Least You Need To Know About Long-Term Care Insurance by .. D. Weisberg (San Jose, CA USA)
This is a great book! It succinctly tells what to look for in a long-term care insurance policy. I especially liked the chapter on important policy features. It’s like having a checklist that explains what’s important and what to look for.

There are other good books on this topic, but nothing so good at helping you shop for the right policy!

Helpful Introduction to Long-Term Care by .. Deborah K Becker (Saint Paul, Minnesota USA)
I was pleased to finally find a book that seemed an appropriate introduction to Long-Term Care Insurance. Although I discounted this book one star in its review (because the first chapter is SLOW reading and there are few graphs or diagrams), I must confess that the lack of charts might help the book seem less like a sales presentation and more like fatherly advice. Actually, this book is an excellent choice to provide for YOUR father if he needs a primer on Long-Term Care Insurance; it will make him feel confident when he starts looking at the many companies offering different products.

The engrossing story of how the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation handled four bank failures. PUBCOMMENTS: During the high interest times of the 1970s and 1980s, banks and savings and loan associations were under heavy financial pressure. Hundreds of them failed. The Home Loan Bank Board permitted the savings and loan associations to treat goodwill as capital, thereby allowing them to remain open and to build up enormous losses that eventually cost the taxpayers billions of dollars. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation took a different approach. It closed the banks or sold them, all at no cost to taxpayers. Bailout is the engrossing story of how the FDIC handled four of these failures.

Sesso (Cary, IL United States)
Medical Coding has interested me for a while and I bought this book to see if it was something that I wanted to pursue. So far, so good. Surprisingly, it is easy to follow and understand. Be aware that you need to have a the CPT Coding book starting with the Chapter 2 exercises. I found it strange that the answer key for Chapter 2 was incorrect as being misnumbered and having one too many answers for the exercises. I wonder how many other mistakes I’ll find in a book that’s been around for years.

“”"For 20 years the people’s source on Medicare and Social Security.”" The new prescription drug plan is coming in 2006! . Beginning January 1, 2006, Medicare beneficiaries who fail to enroll in the new Medicare prescription drug plan (known as Medicare Part D) may miss out on thousands of dollars in savings. . Medicare beneficiaries who enroll in the wrong prescription drug plan (one that doesn’t cover their particular medications, for example) may cost themselves thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket costs before being permitted to switch plans. . Most Medicare beneficiaries who do not enroll in the new drug plan by May 15, 2006 will be penalized when they later enroll — the penalty is 1% per month in additional premium cost for every month they were not enrolled, and this higher cost is permanent. The chapter on Medicare (Chapter 11) contains a whole new section discussing Part D prescription drug coverage. This section discusses eligibility, premiums & deductibles, restrictions on coverage, and deciding which plan is right for you. The chapter on Medicare Procedures (Chapter 12) also has a new section about enrollment & procedures. It discusses enrolling and switching plans, exceptions for coverage (for example, getting the plan to approve a drug that’s not on its formulary), and appeals of adverse coverage decisions. Also, the new prescription drug coverage affects Medigap and managed care plans, discussed in Chapters 13 and 14. An essential tool for everyone over 55, this book shows readers how to cut through the bureaucracy to get their slab of the pie. Social Security, Medicare & Government Pensions clearly explains what the different benefits are, and shows you how to claim what you’ve earned, including: - Social Security retirement and disability benefits - Social Security dependents and survivor benefits - Supplemental Security Income - federal, state and local government pensions - Medicare and Medicaid - Medigap managed care plans - veterans benefits = prescription drug coverage Completely updated to provide the latest information and changes in benefits, this plain-English book is a must-have for anyone who is retired or about to be. “

Heiker (Grand Rapids, MN USA)
As a government employee, I bought this book hoping it would provide some good tips on the federal retirement system. This book may help the new or very unimformed employee, but that’s it. Some of the information on government benefits was just plain wrong, which is why it only gets two stars from me. As an example, it states a FERS employee can contribute a maximum of 10% to the Thrift Savings Plan each year. Wrong! An employee has been able to contribute 15% for years and I believe there is no limit in 2006. This is not good information for a book that was updated in February 2006!

Product Description

The common denominator of a growing number of hard decisions facing modern societies is the need to determine ‘how safe is safe enough?’. The authors begin by defining acceptable-risk problems and analysing why they are so difficult to resolve, considering such issues as uncertainty about their definition, lack of relevant facts, conflicting and conflicted social values, and disagreements between technical experts and the lay public. Drawing on their own experience in risk management as well as the relevant research literatures, they identify and characterise the variety of methods that have been proposed for resolving acceptable-risk problems. They subject these methods to a rigorous critique in terms of philosophical presuppositions, technical feasibility, political acceptability, and validity of underlying assumptions about human behaviour. The authors construct a framework for deciding how to make decisions about risks, and offer recommendations for research, public policy, and practice. Although their principal focus is on technological hazards, their analysis applies to many risks, such as those from new medical treatments or innovative programmes in criminal justice. The necessity of balancing risks and benefits impinges on most people’s lives, and a broad audience will find this book thought-provoking and useful.

Book Description

Brilliant and insightful by .. J. G. Heiser (Sunninghill, Berks)
This is a brilliant and stimulating book. Although it nominally concerns itself with the area of hazard management, policy and technology choices associated with loss of life or limb, it provides a great deal of insight into all forms of risk management and formal decision making.

A very well-researched book, it is obvious that the authors have not only thought long and hard about the subject matter, but have also applied a very disciplined analysis to it. Although the authors are scholars, the book is not necessarily aimed at an academic audience. While challenging, it is still approachable by the lay person.

The text does not recommend any particular methodology for decision making, but instead provides a context within which different decision making methods can be understood and evaluated. It begins by analyzing the problems confronting all acceptable risk decisions, discussing ‘5 generic complexities’ that negatively affect all forms of formal risk analysis. Then the authors provide ‘7 criteria for evaluating the acceptability of approaches to acceptable risk.’ The remainder of the book is spent analyzing approaches to risk management on a spectrum of empirical to formal methods, using their 7 criteria.

I found it an extremely enlightening text with applicability beyond that stated by the authors. It sheds light on many of the ‘formal’ methods that have been developed for areas of concern to me, specifically in the Information Security field, which often tends towards voodoo analysis based on unstated assumptions and incomplete methodologies. Although it was written over 20 years ago, it still provides a great deal of utility and insight today. One of the text’s final recommendations is that the field of Risk Management be made into a formal career choice, with all of the ‘formal trappings’. It is a tribute to the foresight of the authors that this is exactly what is happening today, with the emergence of the Chief Risk Officer role, trade journals devoted to the generic concept of risk, and ever greater academic attention and career training in risk management.

This is an excellent monograph on the thinking behind risk by .. ()
I read this monograph years ago and lent it to someone who obviously found it equally fascinating because I’ve never had it back. If risk is a theme in your work, the ideas in Fischoff and Lichtenstein’s book are worth reading. They offer explanations and analysis which seem to match how real people and organisations take risk decisions.END

More fluff than substance by .. T. Pryor (Arlington, TX USA)
While the info in the book is somewhat helpful, it lacks depth. For example, there are no charts or tables that explain the cash flow for a life settlement investor. The author tries to make the book useful to both people selling their policy to a life settlement firm as well as people who might want to invest in the policy. As a result, the book is a mile wide and an inch deep.

A great insight into a great alternative investment! by .. Adam Butt (Las Vegas, NV)
I am a novice investor and do not know a whole lot about Life Settlement prior to reading this book. Mr. Ben Chiu did a great job in explaining what Life Settlement investment is, it’s history and it’s rewards. Having reviewed this book thoroughly, I now look forward to expanding my portfolio to this lucrative investment method. I highly recommend this book.
